Swimming with my sisters, endless hours imagining real lives for my Barbies, and reading Goodnight Moon over and over again are some of the most memorable times from my childhood. These are the little, intangible things that are so easy to take for granted, but have real impact on who we grow up to be. In the memories I described, I was merely doing what all kids should have the right to do – play!
The unfair reality is that not all children have those experiences, including the countless homeless children living at DC General. Insert The Homeless Children’s Playtime Project. The founders and volunteers believe that “play is a human right that all children deserve, regardless of housing status” – and here at ENC, we couldn’t agree more.
On July 22, ENC had the opportunity to support the champions of children’s playtime at the DC General Playtime Project site. We spent the day cleaning kitchen sets, dinosaurs, doll houses, and costumes, wiping down books, blocks, and art supplies, and organizing materials for the big kid’s room and the baby room located in the homeless shelter.
Passion and integrity play an important role in our company values, and community service is an important part of living those values, both in and out of the office. Donating our time and efforts to an organization that supports children at play was something that we could all get behind. It was an amazing way to support our values and a meaningful team building experience.
